Perplexity product feed for Shopify

When Perplexity answers a shopping question, the product data behind the recommendation comes from feeds that merchants submit through its Merchant Program, and the program is free. The format is Google's: Perplexity publishes no feed specification of its own, so the field list is the Google Shopping one, and what decides whether your offer is matched to the right product is the GTIN. Feedflock turns your Shopify catalog into that feed and regenerates it every hour at a stable URL, to hand over at onboarding, or to push through the channels the Merchant Program Terms name.

Category mapping

Your product types. The channel's categories.

The channel files offers under its own category tree. Feedflock suggests a category for each Shopify product type and you just confirm. One mapping covers every product of that type, including products you add later.

Catch feed issues before Perplexity does.

Before every generation Feedflock checks that every field the channel requires is filled, and, on templates verified against the channel's own spec, that the values fit its rules. Most problems are fixed with one click, without editing products in Shopify.

Setup

Live in five steps

From a bare Shopify store to a listed offer: the whole setup fits into one coffee break.

  1. Apply to the Merchant Program

Apply at perplexity.ai/merchants. Listing your products costs nothing. The program is US-scoped: you must sell and ship to the US, so it pays off for Czech shops that already serve American customers.

  2. Install Feedflock

Add Feedflock from the Shopify App Store. It reads your products, variants, stock and images directly through the Shopify API.

  3. Pick the Perplexity Shopping template

Create a new feed and choose Perplexity Shopping. The format is Google's and every required attribute is mapped already (id, title, description, link, image_link, price, availability, brand and condition), one item per variant, grouped by item_group_id.

  4. Fill in the GTINs

GTIN is the key Perplexity uses to match your offer to the same product at other sellers, and guides report rows without one surface far less. Feedflock takes it from the Shopify barcode. Fill every GTIN you legitimately have and leave the rest empty rather than sending an internal code.

  5. Hand Perplexity the feed

Paste the hosted feed URL when onboarding asks for one, or deliver the same rendered file over the API, SFTP or S3 channel the Merchant Program Terms provision. Feedflock regenerates the file every hour either way; fetch tracking shows the first PerplexityBot download.

The channel

Your products inside the answer

Perplexity answers shopping questions in conversation, and a merchant feed is how your catalog (titles, prices, stock) gets into those answers. It is also the only route to the merchant dashboard.

Free for merchants

No commission, no membership fee: the launch post said it and the current terms name no fee. The paid plan you may have heard about is Perplexity Pro, a subscription shoppers pay, not merchants.

Checkout without leaving the chat

Instant Buy lets US shoppers buy a recommended product right inside Perplexity. PayPal operates the checkout and your existing PayPal transaction fees apply; there is no additional Store Sync fee.

The feed

  • The Perplexity Shopping template maps the full Google-format set (id, title, description, link, image_link, price, availability, brand and condition), because Google's shape is what Perplexity reads
  • One item per variant, grouped by item_group_id, with the variant named in the title so sizes and colours stay distinguishable
  • gtin comes from the Shopify barcode, with the reminder that GTIN is Perplexity's matching key, and empty beats an internal code
  • Prices go out as amount, space and ISO code (59.00 USD); a compare-at price splits into price plus sale_price
  • XML with Google's namespace by default; CSV or TSV is one switch away, and the same file can serve your Google Merchant Center too
  • Every generation lists required attributes that came out empty (a blank brand, a missing image, a duplicated id) before the file ships
  • One stable URL regenerated every hour: paste it at onboarding, or let your pipeline push the same file to the API, SFTP or S3 channel
  • Fetch tracking shows when the feed was last downloaded. The first PerplexityBot in that log is the earliest sign the pipeline is live

Deep dive

01

Google's shape, because Perplexity publishes none

  • RSS 2.0 with Google's g: namespace, one item per variant; CSV and TSV are equally accepted
  • Perplexity publishes no feed specification of its own; every field list for it is extrapolated from Google's
  • The template shares Google's field definitions by reference, so the two can never drift
  • The same rendered file works for Perplexity and for Google Merchant Center
Technical details

There is no Perplexity feed specification. PayPal, which operates Perplexity's in-chat checkout, comes closest to a documented statement: “Google Shopping CSV or similar structured formats work well.” So the document is RSS 2.0 with Google's g: namespace, one item per variant, with Google's attribute names and Google's money shape: amount, space, ISO 4217 code.

Feedflock's Perplexity template does not copy that field model; it shares it with the Google Merchant Center template by reference, so the two can never drift. If you already run a Google feed, this one will feel identical, and the same rendered file can serve both channels.

02

GTIN is the matching key

  • Perplexity matches your row to the same product at other sellers by GTIN
  • Guides consistently report rows without a GTIN surface far less in shopping answers
  • Fill every GTIN you legitimately have: a wrong one is worse than none
  • identifier_exists is derived from the barcode and vendor, no hand-editing
Technical details

Where Google checks your offer against your own product page, Perplexity matches it to a product it already knows, and the key it uses is the GTIN. Every integration guide warns that rows without one are routinely left out of shopping answers, so GTIN coverage, more than any other field, decides whether your products surface at all.

Feedflock takes the GTIN from the Shopify barcode and asks you to be strict about it: fill every code the manufacturer assigned, and leave the rest empty rather than sending an internal SKU. A wrong GTIN is worse than a missing one. For products that genuinely have no identifier, identifier_exists is derived per variant, yes when there is a barcode or a vendor, no only with neither.

03

Getting the feed to Perplexity

  • The Merchant Program Terms name three delivery channels: the API, an SFTP link and a dedicated S3 bucket
  • Current feed-tool documentation also lists a hosted URL that Perplexity fetches, the zero-configuration route
  • No refresh frequency is published; the terms ask for data that is accurate and complete at all times
  • Price parity is explicit: the feed must not show worse prices than your other channels
Technical details

The contract and the tooling tell the delivery story from two sides. The Merchant Program Terms name push channels: an API, an SFTP link, a dedicated S3 bucket. Current feed-tool documentation lists a hosted feed URL that Perplexity fetches as the zero-configuration route, and onboarding walkthroughs mention a feed-URL step. Feedflock covers both: paste the stable URL if you are offered the field, or let your own pipeline push the rendered file to whichever channel you are provisioned. It regenerates every hour either way.

How often Perplexity reads the data is not published; the “every few hours” figures in circulation are invented. What the terms do say is qualitative: product data must be accurate and complete at all times, no thinner than your other channels, with price parity named explicitly. An hourly-regenerated feed is the practical way to keep that promise; fetch tracking shows the downloads, and the first PerplexityBot in the log is the earliest signal the pipeline is live.

04

Who the program is for

  • US-scoped: merchants must sell and ship to the US, and Instant Buy targets US residents
  • PayPal's Store Sync covers the US and UK, with Germany announced
  • On Shopify, Shopify Catalog may already syndicate your products to Perplexity, with no merchant dashboard
  • Crawlable pages with Product and Offer markup can be cited with no program at all; the feed raises the odds
Technical details

The program is for merchants who sell and ship to the United States; Instant Buy, the in-chat checkout, targets US residents, and PayPal's Store Sync covers the US and UK with Germany announced. For a Czech shop that already serves American customers this is a real, free channel; for a shop selling only at home it is one to revisit as coverage widens.

Two shortcuts are worth knowing. If you are on Shopify, Shopify Catalog can syndicate your products to AI platforms, Perplexity among them, but auto-sync exposes whatever data quality the store already has and gives you no merchant dashboard. And PerplexityBot can cite crawlable pages with schema.org Product and Offer markup without any membership at all. The feed plus the application is the route that adds control and the dashboard.

The takeaway

A free program, Google's format and one field that decides visibility: the GTIN. Feedflock keeps your Perplexity feed complete, current and on a stable URL, straight from your Shopify catalog.

FAQ

Yes. The launch announcement said it is free for merchants, a later statement confirmed no commission and no membership fee, and the current Merchant Program Terms name no fee. The paid plan you may have seen is Perplexity Pro, which shoppers pay. Instant Buy checkout is operated by PayPal and only your existing PayPal transaction fees apply.
Two documented routes. Current feed-tool documentation lists a hosted feed URL that Perplexity fetches: paste Feedflock's stable URL when onboarding asks for one. The Merchant Program Terms name push channels (an API, an SFTP link and a dedicated S3 bucket), and the same rendered file works as the upload there. Feedflock regenerates it every hour either way.
It can: Shopify Catalog syndicates products to AI platforms, and Shopify names Perplexity among them, while noting that the full route requires joining Perplexity's Merchant Program. Auto-sync gives you no merchant dashboard and exposes your data as-is. A dedicated feed plus the application puts the controls in your hands: which products go in, GTIN coverage, the full variant structure and how often it refreshes.
The format is literally Google's. Perplexity publishes no specification of its own, and Feedflock's Perplexity template shares the Google template's field definitions by reference. The same rendered file can serve both channels; keeping them as two feeds lets you select products and schedules independently.
They decide your visibility: Perplexity matches your offer to the same product at other sellers by GTIN, and guides report rows without one surface far less. Fill every GTIN the manufacturer assigned; for products that genuinely have none, leave it empty rather than sending an internal code. A wrong GTIN is worse than a missing one.
Yes. Instant Buy (the renamed Buy with Pro) lets US shoppers complete the purchase without leaving the chat. PayPal operates the checkout; your existing PayPal transaction fees apply and there is no additional Store Sync fee. Without it, shoppers click through to your store.
Not yet. Merchants must sell and ship to the US, and Instant Buy targets US residents; PayPal's Store Sync covers the US and UK, with Germany announced. For a Czech shop serving American customers it is a free extra channel today; otherwise it is worth revisiting as coverage widens.
