Rakuten Advertising feed for Shopify
Rakuten Advertising is the global affiliate network once known as LinkShare, not the Rakuten marketplaces. Nothing sells on it directly: cashback portals, content sites and comparison engines download your Product Catalog and place tracked links for a commission. Feedflock turns your Shopify catalog into the tab-delimited file Rakuten's spec describes (all 28 attributes, in Google's vocabulary but with Rakuten's own values) and keeps it current on a stable URL, regenerated as often as every hour.

Your product types. The channel's categories.
The channel files offers under its own category tree. Feedflock suggests a category for each Shopify product type and you just confirm. One mapping covers every product of that type, including products you add later.
price is the old price, sale_price is the current one.
Rakuten defines price as the original item price and sale_price as the current one. That's the opposite of the naive mapping, and it's required whenever the sale price differs. Feedflock is compare-at aware: the regular price goes to price, and sale_price is emitted only when the variant is actually on sale, always with the ISO currency code appended. An always-filled sale_price would invent a permanent discount.
Catch feed issues before Rakuten Advertising does.
Before every generation Feedflock checks that every field the channel requires is filled, and, on templates verified against the channel's own spec, that the values fit its rules. Most problems are fixed with one click, without editing products in Shopify.
Setup
Live in five steps
From a bare Shopify store to a listed offer: the whole setup fits into one coffee break.
Join Rakuten Advertising
Register as an advertiser and subscribe to the Product Catalog programme. Publishers then apply to your program one by one. A live catalog reaches nobody until you approve them.
Install Feedflock
Add Feedflock from the Shopify App Store. It reads your products, variants, stock and images directly through the Shopify API.
Pick the Rakuten Advertising template
Create a new feed and choose Rakuten Advertising. All 28 spec attributes are tab-delimited columns with a header row: id, title, description, link, image_link, price, availability, brand and item_group_id are mapped from the start, one row per variant.
Align the feed id with your conversion tag
id defaults to the Shopify SKU, and Rakuten requires it to equal the identifier your on-site conversion tag reports. Get it wrong and sales never attach to products. Then fill what Shopify can't supply: the Google taxonomy category and Rakuten's capitalised condition, gender and age_group values.
Hand the file to Rakuten
Rakuten's documented flow is an upload: it processes your file, builds a publisher tracking URL for each product and republishes the catalog to approved publishers over SFTP. Give the generated file to your Rakuten contact by the route your account provides. Feedflock regenerates it every hour, and advertisers can process feeds several times a day.

Publishers promote you for a commission
Rakuten Advertising is an affiliate network: cashback portals, content sites and product-search engines pick up your catalog and send you tracked traffic for a commission on the sale. The Product Catalog feed is how your products reach all of them at once.
One feed, one global network
Rakuten Advertising is a single global network with one advertiser feed specification. Language and currency are per-feed account settings, not separate integrations. One template covers every market you sell to.
Tracking links are Rakuten's job
Your link column stays plain. Rakuten creates a publisher tracking URL for each product and hands those to publishers, so there is no tracking glue in your feed to maintain when campaigns change.
The feed
- All 28 attributes of Rakuten's spec as tab-delimited columns with a header row. CSV is one switch away, zip and gzip accepted
- id defaults to the Shopify SKU and never changes: the value Rakuten requires to match your on-site conversion tag, with the variant id as fallback
- price and sale_price in Rakuten's direction: price is the original price, sale_price the current one, each with the ISO currency code appended. Compare-at aware, so the pair never ships backwards
- Availability in Rakuten's exact four space-separated values, and sold-out variants stay in the feed marked out of stock
- Rakuten's capitalised enums (New / Refurbished / Used, Male / Female / Unisex, Adult / Kids) checked as written, not in Google's lowercase spellings
- GTINs checked against Rakuten's list: 8, 12 or 13 digits. A 14-digit barcode is flagged instead of shipped
- Variants grouped by item_group_id from the Shopify product id, required on every channel, where Google makes it optional
- Deeplinks stay plain and variant-pinned, ready for Rakuten to wrap its publisher tracking around
Deep dive
You upload, Rakuten republishes
- The advertiser pushes the file; Rakuten processes it and makes it available to publishers over
SFTP - Rakuten creates a publisher tracking
URLfor each product itself; the feed's link stays plain - Publishers are promised inventory updated daily; advertisers can process feeds several times a day
- The file publishers download looks nothing like yours: different field names, hyphenated availability
Technical details
Rakuten's documented flow runs in one direction: the advertiser uploads product information, Rakuten processes it, creates a corresponding publisher tracking URL for each product and makes the result available to publishers over SFTP. Whether Rakuten can also poll a hosted URL on a schedule is documented only in the login-gated advertiser help centre, so treat the feed URL Feedflock produces as a file you hand to Rakuten by whatever route your account provides, not an endpoint you paste and forget.
Worth knowing: the file a publisher downloads is a different vocabulary entirely (Product Name, SKU Number, Primary Category, Retail Price, Sale Price, Currency), with availability hyphenated as in-stock and out-of-stock. Those are Rakuten's storage shapes, not what you send. A developer who has only seen a publisher file will try to “fix” your feed into the wrong spelling.
Google's names, Rakuten's values
- condition is New / Refurbished / Used, gender Male / Female / Unisex, age_group only Adult / Kids, all capitalised
- availability knows four space-separated values: in stock, out of stock, preorder, backorder
- item_group_id is required on every channel, not just for variants as with Google
- gtin accepts 8, 12 or 13 digits, no
GTIN-14; titles cap at 70 characters
Technical details
Every attribute name in Rakuten's spec is Google's, but three closed enums are not: condition takes New, Refurbished or Used, gender takes Male, Female or Unisex, and age_group takes only Adult or Kids: two values where Google has five. Copying a working Google feed here ships three silently wrong columns, which is why the template checks the exact spellings.
Other rules are stricter than Google's too. item_group_id is required on every channel, used to collapse variants of one product into a single object. The gtin list is UPC-12, EAN-13 and JAN 8-or-13. A 14-digit barcode is outside it, and the template flags one instead of shipping it. Titles stop at 70 characters; the 255 you may have seen is the publisher file's storage size, not your limit.
The id is the join between feed and commission
- id is the item's
SKU, and it must equal the identifier your Rakuten conversion tag reports on site - A mismatch means the feed validates, the links work and the commission attaches to nothing
- Duplicate ids collapse to the first occurrence in the file
- The id must never change after the item is created
Technical details
One sentence in Rakuten's spec carries more money than the rest combined: the id must correspond with the item identifier used in the tagging on site. The feed id is the join between a product listing and a tracked sale. If your conversion tag reports the Shopify variant id while the feed sends the SKU, every sale goes unattributed. The template defaults id to the Shopify SKU for exactly this reason, with the variant id as fallback when no SKU is set.
Two more id rules matter. The value must not change after the item is created: a stable SKU, never a rotating key. And duplicates are collapsed into one using the first occurrence in the file, so a shop that reuses one SKU across variants silently loses rows.
Prices, images and what lives outside the feed
- price is the original price, sale_price the current one, value and currency: “19.99
USD” - Images need at least 600 × 600 px; up to 10 more go into additional_image_link, comma-separated
- shipping and tax exist as attributes, but Rakuten recommends setting them in Google Merchant Center
- Commissions are agreed in the program, per publisher; they are not a feed column
Technical details
Rakuten's price pair runs opposite to intuition: price is the original item price and sale_price the current one, required whenever the sale price differs from the regular price. Both carry a value and a currency: 19.99 USD. The template is compare-at aware: the regular price goes to price, and sale_price is emitted only when the variant is actually on sale. Rakuten never mentions VAT anywhere in its documentation.
Images need to be at least 600 × 600 px, and up to ten additional images go into additional_image_link, comma-separated in a tab-delimited file. Shipping and tax have Google-shaped attributes, but Rakuten's own advice is to configure both in Google Merchant Center apart from the feed, which is why the template leaves them unmapped. And commissions (the cost that matters in an affiliate network) live in your program terms with each publisher, not in the feed.
The takeaway
One file, an hourly refresh and a TSV that speaks Rakuten's values rather than Google's spellings: ids that match your conversion tag, prices in the right order, links left plain for Rakuten to track. Your Shopify catalog stays the single source of truth for every publisher in the network.
